Your Guide to the Black CSCS Card:
Renewals, Requirements and What’s Changed
14th October 2025 | 3 mins
If you manage people, projects or safety on site, the Black CSCS Card is one of the most important ways you can prove you’re competent. It shows that you meet the national standard for construction management and can be trusted to lead teams safely and effectively.
In 2024 the way you could obtain a CSCS card officially changed, Experience alone was enough; every cardholder now needs a recognised qualification to stay compliant.
Even though those changes have been in place for some time, lots of people are still unclear on what they need to do to renew an expired card or obtain a new card for the first time.
Here’s what’s changed, what you’ll need, and how to make sure your card remains valid.
Why the ‘Rules’ Have Changed
For years, many experienced managers and supervisors held a Black CSCS Card through Industry Accreditation, often called Grandfather Rights. This route recognised experience instead of a qualification and allowed managers to gain a CSCS Card without completing a relevant qualification, e.g., an NVQ.
That route officially ended on 31 December 2024. From 1 January 2025, anyone renewing or applying for a Black CSCS Card must hold a recognised qualification, usually an NVQ or SVQ in Construction Management or a similar technical area.
Existing cards issued through Industry Accreditation will stay valid until their expiry date, but they can’t be renewed without a qualification.
CSCS made this change to bring all cards in line with today’s competence standards and the Building Safety Act. The goal is to make sure that everyone, across every role, can show clear evidence of their skills and knowledge through an accredited qualification.
Qualification Requirements for Renewal
With the withdrawal of Grandfather Rights, anyone renewing a Black CSCS Card now needs a recognised management or technical qualification.
You’ll need an NVQ or SVQ that matches the level of responsibility you have in your role. The most common options, that The OM Group provide are:
- Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management – for site and project managers
- Level 6 NVQ in Construction Contracting Operations Management – for contracts, estimating or planning roles
- Level 7 NVQ in Construction Senior Management – for senior leaders and directors
Scottish equivalents (SVQs at SCQF Level 10 or 11) are also accepted.
Courses like SMSTS, SSSTS or NEBOSH are great for professional development, but they don’t meet the qualification requirement for the Black CSCS Card on their own.
If you’re not sure which NVQ fits your role, our team can help you identify the right route.
Clearing Up a Common Misconception
A lot of people we help with their NVQ think they’ll have to go back to a classroom like being back at school or college, sitting exams and doing coursework. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
NVQs are based on the work you already do. They recognise your skills and experience on site, not what you can write in an exam.
You’ll gather evidence from your day-to-day work, things like site paperwork, photos, or records of jobs you’ve managed and talk it through with your assessor. There’s no classroom, no written exams, and no time away from work.
As Alan O’Neil, Director of Communications, CSCS, put it:
“The reality is entirely different, as the process of gaining an NVQ is not as onerous as some might think. Experienced workers are not required to attend college, and it may be as simple as completing an on-site assessment or having a skills assessment discussion.”
How Long the Card Lasts
The Black CSCS Card is valid for five years. When it reaches its expiry date, you can renew it easily through the CSCS online system.
Renewal is a simple process. You’ll just need to confirm your details, upload evidence of your qualification and pay the renewal fee.
Your NVQ or SVQ doesn’t expire. Once you’ve achieved it, it remains a valid, lifelong qualification that continues to support your Black CSCS Card.
CITB Funding and Support
If you need to complete a qualification to keep your Black CSCS Card, funding support is available. We can help you access it.
Through CITB, employers can claim grant funding to cover the cost of completing an NVQ or SVQ linked to your role. The funding is designed to make it easier for people already working in the industry to get qualified without paying the full amount themselves.
To access this support, your employer must be CITB levy registered. Once confirmed, we can guide you through the funding process and help you get started on the right qualification.
Grant amounts depend on the level of NVQ or SVQ:
- Level 4 and 5 NVQs – around £600
- Level 6 and 7 NVQs – between £1,200 and £1,500
From January 2026, all short qualifications will be standardised at £600, regardless of level or subject, so it’s worth acting now while the higher funding is still available.
If you’re not sure where to begin, our team can help you confirm eligibility, register your qualification and make full use of the available funding.
